Chigger bites: stop the itch and treat your yard

Chiggers are microscopic mite larvae that bite at the ankles, waistband, and sock line, leaving an intense days-long itch. The bite is already over by the time you itch — you can't 'dig them out.' The fix is calming the inflammation now and breaking the yard habitat so the next round doesn't happen.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30 min relief, 1 day for yard treatment Cost: $15–$50

Steps

  1. 1

Shower and scrub immediately after exposure

If you've just been in tall grass, shower with hot water and a washcloth as soon as you get home. Most chiggers haven't bitten yet — scrubbing dislodges them before they latch on.

  2. 2

    Skip the nail polish myth

Painting bites with nail polish does nothing. The chigger is already gone — you're not suffocating anything. The welt is your body reacting to digestive enzymes left behind days ago.

  3. 3

    Treat the itch

Apply 1% hydrocortisone or Sarna cream 3x daily. Take an oral antihistamine if bites are numerous. Cool compresses help — heat makes it worse. Itch peaks day 2–3 and resolves by day 5–7.

  4. 4

    Pre-treat clothing with permethrin

Spray pants legs, socks, and hiking shoes with Sawyer Permethrin and let dry overnight before wearing. This is the single most reliable chigger-bite prevention — much more effective than DEET on skin.

  5. 5

Mow and cut back yard edges

Chiggers cluster in tall grass at the edge of mowed lawn — woodlines, fence rows, and around sheds. Mow to 2 inches and cut weeds back 3 feet from sitting areas.

  6. 6

    Spot-treat the yard

Mix Bifen IT per label in a pump sprayer and treat the transition zone between mowed lawn and brush, plus around decks and patios. Re-treat every 3 weeks during peak chigger season (June–early September in most of the US).

  7. 7

    When to see a doctor

Most chigger bites are self-limited. See a doctor if you develop a fever, blistering pustules, or signs of skin infection (spreading redness, warmth, pus).
